Peter O'Donoghue is a digital filmmaker and freelance editor based in Sydney and working in Australia and New Zealand.
He has his first long form documentary Park Life China currently in production (funded by South Australian Film Corporation and scheduled for release May 2012). He co-wrote and edited Florian Habicht's feature Love Story which premiered as opening night film of the NZ International Film Festival and was followed by an extensive NZ cinema release. Peter has edited several long form documentary films and written and directed a number of short dramas. He gives equal weight to his self-inititated projects and his ongoing collaborations with other like-minded filmmakers.
A romance written on the streets of New York.
Peter joined prolific New Zealand director Florian Habicht in Manhattan in July 2010 to start cutting an original feature film at the same time Florian started shooting it. In the beginning nothing was known about the story except that the main character (Florian) would fall for a Russian actress (which he did). With the 'love' part taken care of, the filmmakers started putting their antennas out for some additional inspiration and guidance on the 'story' front. As Peter began manipulating and shaping the footage, Florian went interviewing people on the street to get ideas for what could happen next - ideas which could be acted out with his romantic co-star Masha Yakovenko and then woven together by Peter and Florian in the edit, both during and after the shoot. A year later a feature length film had been crafted from
a generous supply of New Yorkers' ideas, and the line between fantasy and reality had been
blurred beyond all recognition.
Love Story has received overwhelming critical praise since screening to a raucous opening
night crowd at the NZ International Film Festival in Auckland in July. It has since enjoyed an
extensive NZ cinema release and has just begun showing itself to festivals elsewhere.
"...one of the wittiest and most delightful films of this
or any year. This deserves to become
a Kiwi classic - and a New
York one, too." 5 stars, Peter Calder, NZ Herald
"...cut with wit and dexterity." Bill Gosden, NZ Film Festival

"Peter O'Donoghue's assured, concisely dramatic short film works deftly with the impact of sound on image to tell a pungent tale of neighbourhood watch.
